Somewhere in America is a video created by Habib Yazdi, Sara Aghajanian, and Abbas Rattani featuring “Muslim hipsters” or “#MIPSTERZ,” a term coined by Rattani to better address the intersection of religion, community, politics, culture, and Muslim identities of millennials. But above all, it’s what would happen if Muslim women started producing skate video style flicks. This is some savage badass babery imagery.
Presented as part of the de Young Museum’s overall “Contemporary Muslim Fashion” exhibit in the 2018/19 season, the #MIPSTERZ video challenges the average non-Muslim-American’s idea of who Muslim women are, what they look like, and what they do. With more than a billion Muslim women worldwide, we shouldn’t be surprised that trying to put them in a box is impossible and doing so mischaracterizes the place they have claimed in the world.
